Dr. Soetkin Vervust
Biography
I am a landscape archaeologist, studying how landscapes have developed from ancient times till the present day in both the North Sea area and the Mediterranean. My research is interdisciplinary in nature, combining data and methods from archaeology, history, and geography with scientific dating techniques, particularly OSL profiling and dating of earthworks.
I currently act as PI of the FWO SBO Testerep project, co-PI of an FWO Junior project on Mediterranean agricultural terraces and I conduct my own FWO senior postdoctoral research project, studying the changing North Sea coastal landscape during the Middle Ages.
I studied both Archaeology (2008) and Geography (2010) at Ghent University (Belgium), and also obtained my PhD in Geography there (2016), studying the production process of the 18th century Ferraris maps. After completing my PhD, I worked as a scientific researcher for the Archaeology Department of the Brussels-Capital Region using historic maps to better grasp the city’s history. Since 2015 I also serve as Executive Secretary of the International Cartographic Association’s Commission on the History of Cartography (https://history.icaci.org/), and am involved in the yearly organization of international conferences, workshops and exhibits.
In 2017 I started a [PEGASUS]² Marie Curie postdoctoral research project in landscape archaeology at Newcastle University, funded by the FWO and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. Since 2020 I have been working at the VUB as a postdoctoral researcher and am also involved in teaching seminars in landscape archaeology there.
