Migration and transformation of Persistent Organic Pollutants in aqueous environment
Summary
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as PAHs, OCPs, EDCs, PAEs, PCBs, PFCs, PBDEs exhibit high toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and long - distance migration. Due to the incomplete removal of these substances by conventional wastewater treatments, their continuous discharges into the aquatic environment causing harmful to wildlife. Hence, determination of the concentration and behavior of these compounds in aquatic ecosystems has become essential for further understanding their possible effect on aquatic life and human beings. Passive sampling techniques such as DGT allows in-situ pre-concentration of organic pollutants in aquatic environment. CALUX bioassay allows the determination of biological effects of POPs at very low concentrations. GC/MS and LC/MS allow to directly determinate the molecular characteristics and concentration of POPs in environmental matrix. The combination of these methods will help us accurately and furtherly understand the in-situ fate of POPs in aquatic environment.
