We are happy to announce the upcoming exhibition Muddy Minds at REST.
From 1 August to 12 September 2026, REST presents the exhibition Muddy Minds centered around a geo-archaeological excavation, featuring Jumana Manna, Dr. Ella Egberts, Alexandra Hunts, Matilde Yilmaz, the land and Magali Reus. Both archaeology and art make value systems visible, exposing the ongoing process of selecting what we preserve, discard, or forget. Today's material culture is tomorrow's archaeology: the soil reveals traces from millennia ago to just a few years back, yet all layers carry different connotations. Similarly, the exhibited artworks dig into the entanglement of our ecological, political, and social fabric.
Layers of sand, peat, loam, and (fired) clay in the profiles are formed across different timescales by natural, human, or combined processes. The Saalian ice age, sea-level rise, land reclamation, flooding, geo-engineering, land consolidation, and present-day use converge into a single image. Throughout the exhibition, geo-archaeologist Dr. Ella Egberts and REST unravel layer by layer the many appearances of our surrounding through preserved seeds, lugworms, reed peat, and sand pits.

REST is an artistic research project being developed around a historic farm in Southwest Friesland. In this rural setting, exhibitions, scientific research, and public activities take place guided by the question: what is nature, what is culture, and who gets to decide? REST, initiated by artist Saskia Noor van Imhoff and designer Arnout Meijer, considers the plot of land as a collection of materials that function as memory; they can reveal a past, offer insight into the present, and contribute to the imagination of possible futures. Following the movement of materials, an image of humans emerges. This year's focus is on sedimentation: the process by which loose material is deposited by water or wind. By accumulation and settling, information can be held, preserved, and stored.

In order to enable visitors to experience art and nature unobstructed REST allows them the greatest possible freedom. However, the house and neighbouring fields are private. Please keep to the locations designated for the exhibition and be mindful when moving around the site. Dogs may be kept on a lead in the outdoor area of REST.
