ASSISTANT PROFESSOR 2008 - 2009 AT AMGC
RESEARCH EXPERTISE
Marine sediment geochemistry, geomicrobiology, biogeochemical modelling, coastal hypoxia and ocean acidification
CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Recently, an entirely novel type of microbial respiration has been discovered, whereby long filamentous bacteria are capable of generating and mediating electrical currents over centimeter-scale distances. In the framework of an ERC project, my research team is currently investigating the geochemical implications for natural ecosystems and potential technological applications. Recently, we have shown that microbial long-distance electron transport occurs naturally in a wide range of coastal habitats, such as coastal mud accumulation plains, salt marshes and seasonal hypoxic basins.
On following website you can find more information on why microbial long-distance electron transport is such a revolutionary phenomenon, turning upside down ideas in microbial ecology and sediment biogeochemistry.www.microbial-electricity.eu
