ABSTRACT:
BIO: Karen Fontijn is a volcanologist interested in the eruptive histories of poorly known but active volcanoes, in order to understand their potential future hazards, particularly in East Africa, South-East Asia and South America. To study the eruptive products of past explosive eruptions (tephra), she uses a multidisciplinary approach including field observations, geochemistry, geochronology, petrology and sedimentology to understand the frequency and size of explosive eruptions at volcanoes, as well as how they interact with the environment and society.
