PROJECT TITEL:
Investigation on biogeochemical cycle of Mercury and Arsenic in aquatic systems
RESEARCH SUMMARY:
The main purpose of this research is to investigate the biogeochemical cycling of Mercury (Hg) and Arsenic (As) in diverse aquatic systems including rivers, estuaries, and oceans. These two elements have very contrasting geochemical behavior based on their speciation: organomercury forms much more toxic than inorganic mercury, whiles inorganic As forms much more toxic than organ arsenic forms. Therefore, the classic and novel sampling techniques will be applied in this project to understand the species distribution in dissolved, particulate, and dissolved labile phases and to know the influencing parameters on the speciation of these two toxic elements.
