Our AMGC landscape archaeology professor Soetkin Vervust has been working tirelessly on her exhibition on Testerep, the lost island on the Belgian coast!
In a recent interview, Soetkin explains how she, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team from the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), KU Leuven & HoWest, is reconstructing 5000 years of coastal history, revealing the remarkable story of Testerep. Thanks to the groundbreaking work of these Flemish scientists — led by our very own AMGC landscape archaeologist Soetkin Vervust — medieval Ostend is coming back to life in a way you've never seen before.
Be sure to visit the Testerep exhibition in Oostende, from 21 December 2024 till 20 April 2025: “Testerep en het verzonken Oostende - Stad Oostende”.

About Testerep Long ago, you could find the island of Testerep in the centre of our coast. It stretched from Westende to Ostend, with - how could it be otherwise - Middelkerke in the middle. Today that island no longer exists. Find out why in the exhibition ‘Testerep and the sunken Ostend’, which takes you on a visual and sensory adventure through 5,000 years of coastal history. A story about the impact of Roman salt workers, medieval dyke builders and 20th-century tourists. Thanks to the groundbreaking work of researchers from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, medieval Ostend is coming back to life in a way you've never seen before. |
